Most founders choosing a 3PL weigh up price, integrations, and warehouse capacity. For Ella and Adam, co-founders of children’s play brand Play Planet Kids, the deciding factor was simpler: could they drive there and see it for themselves.
That choice came at the end of a period that had pushed both founders past what any business should ask of two people.
Before a 3PL in Brisbane or Gold Coast, fulfilment was running the business, not the other way around
Play Planet Kids makes soft play equipment for children: foam climbers, Pikler triangles, castle blocks, stepping stones. Before Fulfilpackers, the whole operation ran from seven rented shipping containers 45 minutes from home. Adam, a builder, drove a ute and trailer to restock multiple times a week. Orders went out from under the carport. In busy periods, stock didn’t always stay dry.
The breaking point wasn’t a slow quarter or a bad forecast. It was Black Friday, three days after Ella’s surgery, with Adam recovering from two emergency spinal surgeries and no family nearby to help.
“The only option during Black Friday sales was for someone post surgery to put out the packages,” Ella says.
With products averaging 8kg each, some larger than Ella herself, there was no support structure absorbing any of it. The business was growing. The founders weren’t keeping up.
What being local actually solved
Most fulfilment centres are built around compact, high-density SKUs. Foam climbers and oversized soft play sets don’t fit that model, and Ella had already run into providers who weren’t set up to handle products this size. Fulfilpackers was.
Being Gold Coast-based mattered just as much as the fit. Ella and Adam could visit the facility, meet the team, and see exactly how their products would be handled, rather than trusting a warehouse they’d never set foot in.
“I didn’t really have any fears. I think that’s because we live local and could see the facility, meet the staff,” Ella says. “If we lived in another state, I’d always be wondering if they cared as much as me.”
That’s the case for choosing a local 3PL when your business is based in Brisbane or on the Gold Coast: proximity replaces the anxiety that comes with handing your product to a warehouse you can’t picture. Play Planet Kids is Gold Coast based, and Fulfilpackers’ Gold Coast facility is close enough to visit in person. The same logic holds for Brisbane brands about an hour up the road, where a local warehouse still means you can turn up, see the floor, and meet the people handling your stock.
What changed, in hours and in stock
| Before Fulfilpackers | After Fulfilpackers |
|---|---|
| 7 rented shipping containers, 45 minutes away | Stock housed and managed by the Fulfilpackers team |
| Multiple trailer runs a week to restock | About 4 hours a week on fulfilment oversight |
| Stock stored under a carport, wet in busy periods | Zero packaging complaints from customers |
| About 35 hours a week on fulfilment | Double the stock volume ordered for next shipment |
| All packing done personally, including post-surgery | Scaling to two 40ft containers, previously unviable |
Thirty-five hours a week down to four. That’s 31 hours back, every single week. But the more telling number is what those hours used to cost: weekends that were never really off, and kids who came second to logistics.
What zero packaging complaints actually means for a product this size
Play Planet Kids ships large foam products in cardboard boxes, the kind of item where a rough handoff shows up fast in a customer’s living room. Since switching, no customer has reported a damaged or poorly presented delivery. Ella’s care rating for the team: 10 out of 10.
Onboarding wasn’t friction-free. Shopify integrated cleanly and invoicing was simple, but the platform initially didn’t let Ella edit customer shipping details directly, meaning more back-and-forth with the team than she wanted. That’s since been resolved, and it’s worth naming because a fulfilment partner that fixes a real gap says more than one that never had any.

What Ella would tell herself from 12 months ago
Asked what she’d say to the version of herself still running the operation from a carport, her answer wasn’t about logistics at all.
“Stop waiting for things to calm down before you look after yourself,” she says. “There was always another launch, another problem, another late-night email. Businesses grow faster than founders do. If you don’t build support around yourself early, eventually the business demands more than one person can give.”
On what outsourcing changes, and what it doesn’t:
“Outsourcing fulfilment doesn’t remove work, it changes the type of work,” Ella says. “A great fulfilment partner can help you scale faster than you ever could on your own. A poor one can create problems that take months to recover from. Don’t choose based solely on price. Choose one that communicates well, is transparent when things go wrong, and genuinely understands your brand.”
If you’re weighing up a local 3PL in Brisbane or on the Gold Coast
If proximity matters to you the way it mattered to Ella and Adam, that’s not a soft reason to choose local. It’s a legitimate one, whether you’re up the road on the Gold Coast or an hour north in Brisbane. Book a 15-minute call, or come see the facility yourself before you decide.
